The ABACUS RIBass 12 contains elaborate analog electronics featuring an ABACUS amplifier in bridge mode and a 225VA power supply. The RIBass 12 further provides a satellite speaker output on stereo RCA connectors, featuring a continuously adjustable high-pass filter in order to be able to relieve the satellites from producing the low bass frequencies, the subwoofer is already taking care of. As a matter of course, the satellite line output is equipped with an ABACUS Line Driver, eliminating the influences of the – typically long – cables to the satellite speakers.

The RIBass can be integrated in various types of hi-fi systems. In systems with surround receivers or other devices providing a separate subwoofer output, the RIBass is simply connected to the desired system and delivers the necessary bass sound, e.g. for music and movies. Using the integrated low-pass filter of the RIBass, the working range of the subwoofer can be adjusted to an optimal upper cut-off frequency.

The RIBass 12 can also be used in combination with stereo satellite speakers. Again, the separate low- and high-pass filters for the subwoofer and the satellite output enable the user to decide which part of the audio range shall be reproduced by subwoofer and/or satellite speakers. Of course, the RIBass can simply be used in parallel to an existing hi-fi system, too.

Specifically for the use with satellite speakers, the satellite line out features an ABACUS Line Driver, making sure that sound quality does not suffer due to the usual long cables to the satellite speakers. The automatic start-up function as part of the RIBass 12 allows the RIBass to switch on automatically when an audio signal is present at the line input; after three minutes of silence the RIBass switches off automatically. Of course, the automatic start-up can also be deactivated; the subwoofer is then conventionally switched on and off at the main switch on the front panel.

Next to the possible adjustment of the upper and lower cut-off frequency of the subwoofer and the satellite speakers, respectively, the polarity of the subwoofer channel can be reversed by 180°, in order to adapt the subwoofer to any given room and speaker combination. Master volume and subwoofer level can also be adjusted separately.

At high sound pressure levels the subsonic filter, switchable to 16 Hz, 24 Hz and 32 Hz, prevents from too much trouble with annoying neighbours (not all neighbours like their tea cups shaking on their dinner table, just because you are watching the latest blockbuster with deep bass sound effects!!). Finally the overload protection makes sure that the subwoofer is not exceeding its working range and switches off the amplifier in case of a possible overload.
